I decided to list the 328i on both Craigslist and facebook marketplace last night, and so far these are the only two responses I’ve gotten. One asking if I do payments and a truly classic craigslist “I’m in the miltilary and I’m deployed” scam.
No, I don’t do payments, I’m not a bank. If you want to make payments on my car, go to place that finances people, get some financing and let them incur the risk. I’m also not dealing with paypal, even if that wasn’t a scam.
All in all, this is about par for the course. I don’t need to sell it and if I can’t then I’ll just keep driving it. Want for a change does not necessitate one.

How odd to ask about a payment plan. I’ve never heard of that from a private seller.

Feel ya . If I get one more message asking if my bike is still available , I’m going to screa m

Man, you should try selling sub-$1000 shitboxes. I get people asking to make payments on those. One time I told a guy “no” and he sent
back a voice message that just said “fuck you”. Classy.

Weirdly, when I sold my MR2, the buyer came from Craigslist, not Autotrader or the MR2 forum.
The Autotrader buyers were all goofballs or assholes, the MR2 people wanted me to part out the bracing, antenna, and radio, and the CL buyer drove up from San Antonio with cash in hand.
Not the way I’d expected it to go, to say the least.

Welcome to selling a vehicle on FB or Craigslist. Just wait till you get the “carfax” scams. This is what I dealt with when selling my Aprilia.

hello,
Will you accept amazon giftcard s?
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:00 |

Why not take PayPal? Have them "send money to a friend" then give it to them when the money clears lol
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:01 |

I only accept gift cards to pets.com
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:02 |

I think you sent that to me when you were selling it, it looks familiar .
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:02 |

Even after the money clears, they can make a fraud claim. Paypal almost always will side with buyers. Never, ever, ever buy things friends and family.

It’s really just a platform, there’s idiots on all of them. I had almost no luck on autotrader when I tired to sell my 128i, so I figured I’d go these routes first. Sure CL is $5, but it’s only $5.

Perhaps you’ve heard of it under its old school name - it used to be called grand theft auto.

How'd you answer the second guy's question?
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:05 |
|
Not sure if it’s a scam or he can’t financing or thinks I’m going to do him a favor. Regardless, I don’t care how I get the money as long as it’s on the single payment plan.

Surprisingly few gramm atical err ors on the second one.
Also, just tell the guy you’ll accept the payment in installments, then, when he’s paid the whole amount, he can take the car home.

I though t the friends and family option meant they gave up fraud protection

I would just assume that the first payment is all you’ll ever see, regardless of what the buyer promises. Just another scam artist.

Consider using OfferUp or LetGo, very popular

Good suggestion, I’ll see how much I want to sell it and how long this goes on for.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:15 |

Yeah, I wouldn’t ever trust someone on that, unless they wanted to make 1 payment. In that case, only a single payment is good!

Hey you still haven’t been offered bitcoin. So that is a win. I had financing fall through with a buyer on my car. I felt bad because the guy seemed genuinely a nice guy, but then I reminded myself, banks don’t refuse financing for no reason.

No bitcoin, yet.

That’d be a very firm price if I were you! For context I got more than that for my 97k mile N54 335i (so a wash?) back in January (softer market). Granted mine was LeMans Blue over Saddle Brown, but the paint was shot! And I did also have upcoming maintenance.

All of this crap is a surprisingly big reason why I still own the Pathfinder and the E46. Especially the Pathfinder. It’s been sitting for god knows how long now.
Funny thing is that my next door neighbor has an ES that’s been sitting in his driveway even longer. And they’re both actually nice houses. I guess we’re the black sheep of the neighborhood. His is even blocking in his Mark LT.

My preferred response is: “ yeah we can do payments, pay what you like when you want! Only condition is I keep the vehicle, all keys, and the title until it is paid in full. You can come look at car from the street if you want, and even tell people you own it!”
When they get upset (they always get upset) I ask why they were okay with doing the inverse of that? That’s usually when we get to cussing, slurs, or that I will never get my asking because it’s a crap car

I feel you. Selling my cargo van right now. The majority of people were “buying on behalf of someone” with terrible grammar. One of the legit-sounding guys offered half my asking price
I dunno where people can’t get enough of used cars, but it’s definitely not where I live haha

I got a ton of those buying my truck a few years ago. I'm in northern Virginia, and would find stuff on local CL but get "I'm stationed in New York, the truck is on base in Kansas, please pay pal". Yeah, no
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:34 |

I’m not really sure how to price it, so I figured right under 10k was about right, since it’s a 328i.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:36 |

Did you try selling to Carvana / Shift / Zoom yet? I read on the internet that they’re overpaying for everything, may not be worth the hassle to sell yourself.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:36 |

It's only been a day or so though, right? All it takes is one real buyer.

I took payments on a car that I sold for $350. They guy was a meth addict and couldn’t have more than $50 on his person at any given times.

Just wait until you start getting the trade offers. And then the guy who wants more photos, and after giving more, they ask for more. Then each additional photo comes with a question, usually regarding a reflection in the paint or chrome. The suggestion of just coming to look at it is constantly ignored. Not gonna happ en.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 14:47 |

Yeah just a day, but I’m anticipating this being a marathon. Trying to sell my 128i put a sour taste in my mouth, but trading it in wouldn’t give me what I needed.

I got an appraisal at Carvana and they said 5500. I did sell a car to a now defunct company called Beepi, and they paid well especially considering I had no real inerest.

This is amazing! nothing new, but the balls on some people...
Payments? yes. One! When you have enough to pay the asking price. What the hell are these people thinking? You owe them something because you dared to sell them your car?
As for deployed.
Let’s say this was a real case. you’re a deployed military person and wanted to surprise your kid with a car... no inspections. no kicking tires.... I love my fucking kid so much I want to give him this bundle of joy.. just give it to me and ill paypal/venmo you some money.
Yeah! Unreal!

They are paying private party value for certain vehicles, BMW’s not being one of them. They offered me $4,500 on my wife’s X1. Two years newer, much higher trim, and a few more miles than my Jeep which they gave me $15,500 for.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 15:17 |

I took payments on a car once. I initially thought the guy was joking, since I was selling it for $1k. I told him if he wanted to make payments he could pay me $500 every two weeks, but with interest the car would cost $2,500, and I would keep the car and any past payments if he tried to screw with me .
First four payments went great, then a friend found the car on CL before the last payment was made. We set up a fake meet where this asshole tried to sell the car to my friend without the title (because I still had it). I called the guy up, told him he needed to be at my house in the morning with the last $500 or I was taking the car back. Got my last $500.
Much different situation as I only paid $800 for the car, and I knew where the guy lived and worked.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 15:43 |

I mean, I don’t know that these people are necessarily scammers. Some of them I suspect really intend to make those payments. But then when they come due, money’s tight so they put it off a bit, and then money is still tight so...

Kind of works

It’s a way for the seller to avoid PayPal fees, IDK about lack of fraud. protection. Makes sense, though.
Despite having been a PayPal user forever, I’ve never actually read all the fine print.

You can absolutely do a payment plan. For the low low price of going to your Credit union and asking them for a loan.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 16:32 |

That’s what I basically told him.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 16:53 |

Throw it up on your local chapter BMW CCA Facebook group. You’re car isn’t CL/FB material, it’s too nice.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 17:29 |

I’m sure that some are scammers and some are not.
But if they’re reliant on financing from random strangers, they’re ultra high risk
But either way, you ain’t getting paid, so what’s the difference?
![]() 08/25/2020 at 17:54 |
|
You should do payments! 25% interest. They collect the car at the end of the term. Seems like a sound investment opportunity.
![]() 08/25/2020 at 19:24 |
|
So, I’ve noticed some ads stating not to ask if the car is still available, and I don’t get it. Seems like a perfect conversation starter to me. It doesn’t take long to type or to r ead, it’s a simple yes or no question ma king the seller’s response easy , and after that you can move right on to the next question regarding the item or meeting arrangements.

This is just how selling things on the internet is these days. Took me over a month and about 15 different potential buyers, probably 10 were scams, just to sell a $1000 beater Acura cl
![]() 08/25/2020 at 20:36 |

Not sure how this experience is going to be , if I can’t find a real buyer I’ll probably end up keeping it. No one was interested in my 128i when I tried to sell it, ended up selling it to a now defunct internet company.

In theory, you are right, but 99 % of the time, it’s crickets afterwards. I’ve got no problem using it as an ice breaker, but rarely d o they ask anything else. Counting right now, I have 46 people who have asked that’s and never said anything else back
![]() 08/26/2020 at 18:33 |

Well, t h ey snooze, they lose! It’s not like that initial question of availability counts as a reservation. They gotta follow up if they don’t want you to sell it to somebody else.

I didn’t know the “I’m in the military and I’m deployed” thing was a popular scam... Hence why I couldn’t get A SINGLE response from a seller when I actually WAS deployed as a young military lad ... D’ oh!
